The Washington Post.com article "Syrian Refugees Deserve Freedom From Slaughter" by Kathleen Parker is an anti Republican hit piece.
Kathleen Parker essentially says that all Governors wanting to halt the Syrian influx into the states are "morally reprehensible, un-American" and probably ilegal. She attributes their refusal to fear, even though most of these governors have repeatedly supported a much more robust response to both ASSAD and ISIS. She hold's Cruz accountable because he would allow only Christian Syrians to arrive, ignoring the fact that Christians are being exterminated in the ME, while Moslems are being displaced, and that it is up to us to determine who qualifies for refugee status.
We allowed the Hmong in after Vietnam, while allowing hundreds to flounder and drown in the Ocean, because they had been our allies and were being persecuted. How is that different than permitting the Christians who share our majority religion in over others who don't?
She then goes into bunch of quibbles on liberty, vetting, before bringing it back to politics where she brands all conservatives as anti-immigrant or Islamophobic, while at the same time saying she doesn't mean it.
She then agrees with Obama that we can't send troops: .. he said that freedom from ideological extremism has to come from within “unless we’re prepared to have a permanent occupation of these countries.” .. Only the most hawkishly delusional would disagree with this assessment.
Well, Germany, Japan and South Korea would all disagree with this assessment We have had hundreds of thousands of troops (altogether) in these countries for the past 70 years. Anyone call this a "permanent occupation" or have any troubles with it since the mid 50's?
She is only right that we must have a coherent refugee strategy. This is what I'd recommend.
1. Muslims:
a. Admit women and children (under 13, those above 13 can already be Jihadists as can be seen by 13 year olds stabbing people in Israel).
b. Admit men over 60 (in other words those no longer of a fighting age).
c. Provide all men you reject with weapons so that they can fight for their families and then have the families rejoin them in Syria.
2. Christians
a. Same rule as Moslems, but children under 17.
b. Utilize Priests of their various sects which themselves have been carefully vetted to make sure the refugees are actually Christian.
3. Other minorities
a. Same rule as Muslims. It is more difficult to determine whether someone is faking or not. Make it like Christians if expert determine it is safe.
Family re-unification for refugees only in the country of origen. Refugee status is temporary refuge not migration.
