Liberal vs Conservatives - A jewish question - Post 4.

A friend of mine (who already has contributed the Blood Libel article) responded to the blog on Conservative vs Liberal, but did not do so as a comment. I believe it is a good comment so I am adding it to th blog.

Your essay on the definition of conservative/liberal is very good. At least, if we were dealing with Marxists, there would be an underlying consistency to the arguments. Unity of theory and praxis. Here we are dealing with not even sentimental socialism. I believe underlying much ( I won’t say all) contemporary thought is the kind of infantilism ,wish fulfillment, that distinguished the New Left ( good old 60’s) from Old Left. If we would eliminate x,y, z (fast food, cigarettes, oil drilling, etc) it would be a perfect world, we can collect our trust fund payments and smoke weed, each under his own fig and own vine etc. I recall an acquaintance ( the son of a great Rabbi, also a product of the Berlin Hochschule, who was clearly espousing the New Left line, and then, blithely talked about looking forward to travel to some exotic and expensive location—it was such an indicating that equality of benefits is what the left has always dreamed of for others-not for themselves, since some are more equal than others. I am sure that anyone on the left would deny it, but it is , I believe, an underlying psychological motif. (The press and academia always use psychological analysis on the right, why not allow it in reverse).
